Technologies
Information Technology and Process Control
Center
Research, Development, and Engineering, Rohm &
Haas

topics:
* An approach to real-time collaboration for
distributing
information using streaming video. Today people
often
summarize topics and projects in a group setting.
This
same information can be distributed in real-time
to
extend collaboration and archived information for
future use.
* The oncoming convergence of video-conferencing,
group
meetings, streaming media, and knowledge
archives.

TOPIC:
Electronic Records and Electronic
Signatures --
Or how you know the content you are reading is
authentic
and hasn't been tampered with
PRESENTER: Marti Turocy, President, Quality
Systems
Integrators
DESCRIPTION: In the mid-1980's Congress passed
the
Paper Elimination Act. Hooray. Less paper. Save the
trees.
The consequences of this Act have finally rippled
through
the government to industry. In dealings with the
government
in 2002, companies can now increasingly send
information
in digital form. However, the government has one
concern:
digital information is easy to manipulate. What
will
companies have to do to convince the government
that
their digital information hasn't been tampered
with? How
will you prove that what you are submitting is as
authentic
as you say it is?
As an example, we will explore what is happening
right
now in the pharmaceutical industry as a result of
FDA
regulation 21 CFR Part 11 (use of Electronic
Records and
Electronic Signatures). If you deal with the EPA
and OSHA
(e.g., chemical industry), you are facing
immediate
compliance steps also. We will explore the standard
as
well as a management approach that will help launch
a
21 CFR Part 11 initiative within your organization.
Protecting
you data, information, and knowledge is good
business
regardless of government regulations.
Marti is currently on the PDA technical committee
with the
FDA for 21 CFR Part 11.

session
will be on "what worked" and "what we've learned"
from what
worked out differently than what was expected.
Multiple

session wide open to questions. Paul Hilt, Director
of KM, Mentor Group, will moderate the session.

TOPIC: The Great KM Debate: What is the Future
of Knowledge Management?
Affirmative
Negative
DESCRIPTION:
KM may be in danger of becoming a "program of
the month." If this is so, in two years we may all
be out of business. It is time to reflect on how to
proceed: In the same direction? With modest change?
Or, with radical change? The resolution to be
debated is "For Us to Live, KM Must Die... by
2005." Which side will you take? You'll have plenty
of opportunity to get involved.
DEBATERS:
Taking the affirmative side will be:
* Andrea Hornett, Assistant Professor, Penn
State (hornetta@yahoo.com)
* John Barrett, Principal, ITI Associates
(JohnB@iti-associates.com)
Opposing the resolution will be:
* Jordan M. Corn, Knowledge Infrastructure
Manager, Rohm and Haas (JCorn@rohmhaas.com)
* Michael P. James, Technical Community
Webmaster, Rohm and Haas
(MichaelJames@rohmhaas.com)
